Yo, Congress, Here's an idea for inspiration as you write laws... instead of reading the US Constitution or posting the Ten Commandments, how about checking out the Sermon on the Mount. The Beatitudes have a great way of presenting priorities for folks. So many of you say you are Christian, maybe you already do legislate by them! Let's see...
Is there a warm spot in your heart for Corporations? Blessed be these holders of the money who should never have to pay taxes - local, state or federal. May they be protected from the EPA with their silly rules for clean air and water! May they never feel a responsibility to assist in providing the education they want their workers to have. And for heaven sakes, release them from such crazy expenditures as laying out money for health care and retirement (especially Social Security and Medicare since old folks add nothing to the bottom line!!)
Do you feel all warm and fuzzy about CEO's? (After all, we could all be one...someday!) Blessed be these hard working saviors of our economy, steering their corporate ships along the edge of legality (never mind morality). May their bonuses continue to be in the 50 million dollar range! And heaven forbid that any kind of taxes be assessed on said bonuses! We await their books on "How to Easily Become a Billionaire," and "How to Spend Billions on Your Houses, Yachts, and Mistresses."
And how far will you go to support those wonderful Shareholders -- those in whose name you structure corporations to operate for PROFIT? Everybody is a shareholder these days. Even the poorest of us probably has an IRA or a 401K or (if Congress has their way) a Social Security fund based entirely on the always reliable Stock Market! So laws that help shareholders aid us all - right? Maybe you'd better Google "the economy - 2008 on."
Maybe you need to take a cue from the Sermon on the Mount....
Blessed are the POOR...those who HUNGER and THIRST...are the PEACEMAKERS...the MEEK...that MOURN...are MERCIFUL...that suffer PERSECUTION...are CLEAN of HEART... Any of that driving your legislative agenda? No?
Balancing the budget and setting out our priorities and values for years to come is an awesome job! Perhaps we shouldn't have expected people who often openly take money from special interest groups to serve us in this, but we did and you're it! Now is the time to stand up for the children and education (even at the risk of not being re-elected by more educated, informed voters!). Without an educated, HEALTHY, work force, there is no future!
So, how about including the Sermon on the Mount as you go about your day-to-day activities. Hey, maybe you could check them out in place of demonizing worker's unions! It would be a start...
